The Winechuggers

Caught a live set from San Francisco's own, The Winechuggers, last night. Was seriously blown away. Reminded me at times of Arab Strap, with an eerie Americana feel at times... featuring lap steel slide guitar, keyboards, and the enjoyably slurred vocals of Bill Cameron. Cameron's between-song banter was incredibly hilarious(unlike every other band I've seen... less talkin', more rockin'), which I could not do justice to in print. This guy could do standup if he wanted to.

The band also played the Mesh Noise Pop Happy Hour in February, unfortunately I was not in town for that. They have an album coming out soon on Arena Rock Recordings.

Incidentally, coffee plus Advil Cold & Sinus equals a very bad idea.

Drink the Koolaid Tom Cruise

An associate of mine has started a Web site for Tom Cruise. www.drinkthekoolaidtomcruise.com.
It is still in its development stages. Oh, the domains people buy.

Bay Area Art & Music Picks for June 29-July 5

Thursday, June 30
Veronica Lipgloss & The Evil Eyes, Hey Willpower, Stripmall Seizures
Bottom of the Hill
All Ages
$8
Doors: 8:30PM/Show: 9:30PM

Catching a Veronica Lipgloss & Evil Eyes live show is like warping back in time to the avant garde intensity of early '80s New York (hey, it's even in their bio). Frontwoman Rhani Remedes performs like a woman posessed and the band's raucous sounds drives audiences into frenxied behavior. This show is the record release for the band's 12", The Witches Dagger. Supporting the show is the dance pop genius of Hey Willpower, who you may remember from our one year anniversary party. Look for an interview with Veronica Lipgloss & The Evil Eyes in the September/October issue of Mesh.

Friday, July 1
The Soviettes, Grabass Charlestons, Toys That Kill
Ivy Room, Albany

21+

The Soviettes' latest release, LP III, is bratty, fun, punk-wave at its finest. This Minneapolis four-piece is made up of three women and a drummer with "a wang doodle and is on San Francisco's own Fat Wreck Chords. The band manages to blend classic punk and alternative influences into a sound that is driving and memorable.

Saturday, July 2
The Plus Ones, Elephone, Lugosi
Bottom of the Hill

All Ages

$7
9:00PM
The Plus Ones craft catchy pop songs with enough bite and clever lyrical content to put most songwriters to shame. The band's new album, Oh Me Of Little Faith, is a testament to these skills and a step forward from the El Cerrito band's previous releases. Alternatingly upbeat and only slightly melancholy, it sure a pleaser for fans of power pop in the vein of Jawbreaker. They are also the guests on this week's Mesh Mix.

Bay Area Art & Music Picks for June 22-June 29

I've decided to start making regular picks of art and music shows in the Bay Area that I think are worth your time and money. I'll probably do these every two weeks on Wednesdays.

  • Wednesday, June 22nd

Hightower, S.T.R.E.E.T.S. (Vancouver) all ages at the Auto Gallery: 3223 Telegraph, Oakland.

Hightower are the Bay Area's reigning kings of Bay Area sludge metal. Their appeal goes beyond metalheads to punk rockers and skaters and their live shows are legendary. Catch them with Vancouver's S.T.R.E.E.T.S (
which stands for Skating Totally Rules, Everything Else Totally Sucks and may be the best band name ever) whose brand of skate hardcore pleases the masses with songs like "Let's Get Rad." Plus, there's art by: art by: Faye Jaime, Billy Kroft, Tracy Timmins, Morgan Wick and Lisa Sussman.

  • Friday, June 24th

Two, count 'em, two bands featured in previous issues of Mesh: Seattle's purveyors of post-punk mayhem, The Intelligence and the infectious sounds of San Francisco's own Boyskout, whose live show offers a dance rocking good time.

Exclusive!!!

Pitchfork's John Vanderslice interview.

Sir Too Short Comin' Straight from Oakland

In spite of my hatred for its doe-footed outfielders, I always have a soft spot in my heart for Oakland. When I headed out there early this evening, I looked forward to a relaxing night seeing one of my favorite bands, The Mall, at a warehouse space in Oakland. The climate in the East Bay is remarkably better than it is in San Francisco, so I also looked forward to hanging out at night in a short-sleeve shirt.

Turns out, the address for The Creamery I read on Fecal Face must have been incorrect, because myself, my roommate and her man-friend walked around downtown Oakland for a few hours looking for this place in a depressingly futile search. I've been on the phone with her man-friend, who is currently walking from Oakland to Albany, I'd say a ten-mile walk, and he keeps hanging up on me.

Imagine There's No Religion

Lord, the way things are going, they're gonna crucify me.

I'm Going to Be Listening to This a Lot.

The new Kid606, Resilience, is a collection of his songs that were recorded for various projects and ended up on this album. It is very nice to listen to, kind of like Boards of Canada with dancebeats. Put out by the excellent Tigerbeat6.

Pete G

Pete Geniella is an amazing photographer here in San Francisco. He has a photoblog here. He's taking photos for Mesh now, and I couldn't be more excited. Look for his photos of The Mall in the next issue.

Sylvia Ji

I like Sylvia Ji's work.

Joining the Cult of Gram Rabbit

Went to catch my friends Liz & Chuck and their band, Lines In Analog Sound, at Cafe Du Nord last night. Another excellent set from them. Stuck around not realizing that Joshua Tree's Gram Rabbit was playing. We reviewed their album, Music To Start a Cult To, awhile back and I had played a track off of it on the Mesh Mix. I caught half a Gram Rabbit song at Cafe Du Nord when they played there a few months back, but didn't know too much.
Normally, I wouldn't expect myself to be into a band that wears bunny ears, but this band broke through my prejudices. Combining Patsy Cline-ish eerie country with Prince-like funk, slide guitar and indie dance sounds these guys turned out the party. In spite of the fact that the lead singer goes by the moniker Jesika von Rabbit, she--and the rest of the band--is completely charismatic. (Or as my friend said to me at the show last night, "Dude, she's like totally hot, in a really cheesy way." I'mma conspire to get them to play a Mesh party.

Executing Big Bird

A House subcommittee recommended eliminating all Federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting today. I wonder if they'll take that money and give it to Fox News instead.

And the #1 Search For "Brophy" on Google is...

The Unequalled Brophy Bros.!!! Dear God, please let me be related to these dudes.

Kari Byron Dolls

As my fruitless search for a Web developer continues, I came across www.receiverstudio.com, which led me to Kari Byron. She makes these amazing doll sculptures, such as this one:

Read about her at Anno Domini gallery.

Hotel des Arts

Went down to Hotel des Arts today. Can't stress how cool that place is. Learn all about it in Kendra MacLeod's article here. John Doffing, the Hotel's curator and supporter of San Francisco underground and street art, showed me around the place and introduced me to Casey O'Connell, an artist from Florida that sent John a few images. He liked her work so much he asked her to come out for a show. Despite the fact that she'd never taken part in a show before, she sold all twelve of her pieces amongst a bidding war for her work. Look for more on Casey in an upcoming issue.

Casey's art:

Also met a few other artists who's work I'm really into. The next big show at Hotel des Arts is August 3rd.

Now playing:

G. Gordon Crazy Ass MoFo

The guys that engineered the Watergate break-in are talking about ethics.

Nixon aides condemn 'Deep Throat' for betrayal
AFP - Wed Jun 1, 6:23 AM ET

WASHINGTON - (AFP) - Aides to the late president Richard Nixon have said that former FBI deputy director Mark Felt, unmasked as the anonymous Watergate source known as "Deep Throat," had breached professional ethics by leaking information. G. Gordon Liddy, a Nixon operative who engineered the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Campaign headquarters in the Watergate building in Washington, and served four and a half years in jail for it, said Wednesday that Felt "violated the ethics of the law enforcement profession."
