Gurp City’s town crier brought us the news that Conceit won YouTube’s On the Rise rap video contest with the clip of his song “Scissorts & Glue,” off of the Wasted Talent Mixtape. We’ve been loving Conceit’s album since we first heard it, and you can buy it on his Myspace page. Hopefully this is a sign of more good things to come for the rest of Gurp City. I want to see that shit on a bottle of water!
I just realized that, in an odd coincidence, or perhaps, more likely, in a Swedish conspiracy against the City of San Francisco, that Peter Ragone’s Internet sock puppetry includes the names Peter, Byorn & John (Nelson). Could he just be a fan of Swedish indie pop sensations Peter, Bjorn & John? And really, how could he resist? What with their catchy ass song, “Young Folks” the video of which Bryan already posted, but I’m posting again, due to it’s local political relevancy. No word on whether the boy and girl on the video are meant to represent Gavin Newsom and Ruby Rippey-Tourk.
It’s not supposed to be this cold in San Francisco, but that’s alright, feels more like Christmastime. Join Trainwreck Riders in seasonal sorrows with the video for their song “Christmastime Blues” below. Then catch them live at Cafe Du Nord on Friday, January 12th with Wires on Fire. $10, 18 and up.
Beware: the norovirus is going around. I threw up in the back of an AC Transit bus. Hopefully you can evade the virus, but these two songs are too infectious to resist.
The best thing by far about Bay Rap is its unwavering dedication to inventing language. Every new single that comes does its best to reinforce the preexisting Phrases such as Hyphy, Ghostride the Whip and one of my personal favorites, the multifaceted Thizz Face , while carrying on the cause of creating a new language that no one can understand.
Let us, for a moment, contemplate The Federation’s “18 Dummy” video, where dreads are even being shaken by the airblown dancing man and ghostriding just happens on a flatbed.
EVERYTHING about this song/video is incredibly hype. Rick Rock’s glitch banger is absolutely insane and the video is an unabashed homage to our beautiful bay. Apparently 18 Dummy has its own definition, but here is where hyphy’s dedication to its own language becomes Doo Doo Dumb. These days a banger can’t be just a banger, Rick Rock can’t just be a producer and 18 Dummy isn’t just slang. It is also an energy drink.
I can’t help but be incredibly bored by this. On one hand, we are in the midst of a “movement” and at the same time, I am in the middle of a Vans commercial.
Sherry Fraser brings her band, Two Ton Boa, to the stages of The Uptown on Saturday, December 2nd & The Hemlock Tavern on Sunday, December 3rd to support its new album, Parasiticide (Kill Rock Stars). Two Ton Boa released its eponymous, debut EP in 1999. Vice named it best album of the month. The Stranger gave it four out of five stars. The New York Times named it one of the top ten obscure albums of the year. The band toured for a brief time, introducing audiences to the band’s brooding, bass-heavy, cabaret/carnival sound and Fraser’s phenomenal voice, which emanates with amazing force. Then, the band disappeared for five years, emerging in early 2005 for some live shows with new songs that appear on the Kill Rock Stars release. Now back in full form, the band is set devour the masses.
Both shows are 21+. The Uptown: $8 The Hemlock: $7
