Before I started Mesh, some friends and I talked about starting a magazine called Bay Area Legends, which would have featured stories on random Bay Area celebrities, quasi-celebrities and personalities, people who were a part of our lives growing up. One of the first people I wanted to interview was Jose Uribe, former Giants shortstop and subject of one of the greatest cheers in baseball history: “Oooh! Ree-bay! Oooh! Ree-bay!”, with one side of Candlestick shouting the “Oooh!” and the other side shouting the “Ree-bay!” To this day, I have tried unsuccessfully to start that cheer at Pac Bell/SBC Whatever Park.
I tried tracking him down back then, in early 2003, and discovered he lived in the Dominican Republic, where he owned a hardware store. I contacted the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association to try and secure an interview, but never got the chance to speak with him.
The Chronicle reported today that Uribe was killed in a car accident. He was 47 years old
