Mesh Magazine presents another night of reckless abandon at the Rickshaw Stop on Friday, March 30th, featuring performances by headliners Hey Willpower, Rubies, Casy & Brian with DJs Jenny Young and Omar keeping the dance floor moving all night long.

Hey Willpower returns to the stage having kept a low profile over the past several months, making this a highly, highly anticipated performance. Having toured with the likes of Le Tigre & Scissor Sisters, collaborated with Peaches and Annie and unabashedly declared their love of dance pop music, Hey Willpower knows how to turn the party out. Frontman Will Schwartz (Imperial Teen) is joined by Tomo (Tussle) and two masterful backup dancers who gel together to create an unforgettable show. Sorry JT, but Schwartz has been bringing sexy back for years.

Petri Dish

The past week has been hell, as I’ve had some sort of mutant bacteria take up residence in my throat. I would wake up in the mornings having sweat so much, it literally felt like someone had turned a hose on me in the middle of the night. My throat was so swollen they had to put me on steroids so I could breathe. After a couple of trips to the doctor, they gave me an injection of antibiotics that seems to have helped. It’s never fun to have a doctor look at your throat and say, “Ooh, that’s really red and beefy.” Now that I’ve hopefully grossed you out, what this really means is that I completely missed out on Noise Pop, which is why I didn’t write anything about it.

Great San Francisco Pillow Fight of 2007 Videos

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Headed down to Justin Herman Plaza last night for the Great San Francisco Pillow Fight of 2007. There were at least a couple thousand folks down there who showed up with pillows, a few in costumes (a pumpkin, some superheroes, a German soldier) and at least one guy with a bullhorn. The fight broke out just before 6PM. I ventured in with two cameras: my SLR, and my point and shoot, which I used to take some video. I was getting smacked and bumped into, but anytime someone hit me with a pillow they would say, “Oh, sorry man, didn’t see you camera.” I left a little after 6:20PM and there were still people wailing away. I’ll post some still photos tonight, but in the meantime, here are some videos.
These videos might make you dizzy in the Blair Witch Club type way, so I’m offering up these excuses:

1. I never shoot video.

2. I was getting smacked in the head with pillows while filming.

3. I was shooting still photos with my other camera while shooting the videos.

Googe

What is up with Google’s Valentine’s Day logo? Why does it say “googe” (pronounced gooj or goozh)? If I had to use it in a sentence:

Yeah, Gavin was Tourkin‘ that guy’s wife, but at least he had the sense not to googe on her dress.

Porous Walker & Sacha Eckes Tonight @ Receiver Gallery

Porous and Sacha Island

Tonight at Receiver Gallery is Mesh contributors Porous Walker’s and Sacha Eckes‘ art opening “Your Face Looks Like an Island”. I received word that this will be Mr. Walker’s last San Francisco show ever, seems as though he is retiring from our fair city. I also received word that he has a special surprise that has to do with a piñata, George Washington and an eagle, maybe some states. We obviously love Porous and Sacha’s work, if you haven’t seen there’s in person, check it out at 1415 Valencia Street @ 25th. The show runs through February 25th.

Tartufi headlines the show with their dynamic and explosive sound. As Aquarius Records remarked, “Singer and guitarist, Lynne Angel and drummer, Brian Gorman with the help from Tim Green (of The Fucking Champs) have crafted a mathy stew of beauty and noise with vocals that are at times both angelic and damning with turn-on-a-dime changes, majestic sweeps, soft interludes, and only a touch of over-indulgence. The acrobatics that Angel brings doubly to the guitar and her voice have to be seen live to be believed, where they seriously sound like a four piece with a choir.” An interview with Tartufi will be posted on TheBayBridged.com on January 30th. For more information, check out their web siteMySpace page. or

Moggs recently made our list of our favorite episodes of 2006. Our colleagues at Playing in Fog once wrote, “To many of us in the Bay Area, Moggs have been one of the greatest local bands to grace a stage … if you can catch them. Irregular shows and no product to rely on meant that a live performance by them was your only chance for hearing their angular-yet beautiful sounds, and it was like striking gold - better jump on it because you never know when it might happen again.” To hear our interview with Moggs and some songs from their excellent album The White Belt Is Not Enough, head here.

Sholi, another Bay Bridged favorite, is opening the show. To quote the Bay Guardian, “Blonde Redhead met the Dirty Three, had a fight, then had a baby with King Crimson contributing ancillary sperm. The bundle of noise was named Sholi and was greeted with oohs and aahs from psych-heads, prog-maniacs, and cut-the-BS rock and rollers, all frozen in unison to take in the babe’s darkly romantic and roomy wails… What meets your ear should be mathematically ethereal and strangely danceable – the group hides its pop-imp self under a trench coat festooned with knives and chain saws, like that of the woman in the Far Side who told her date she was going to slip into something more comfortable.” Check out our interview with Sholi and some of their music here.

Mark your calendars now and we’ll see you at the show!

Matt Gonzalez Running for Mayor Again?

Matt Gonzalez for Mayor

According to Fog City Journal, Mesh contributor (oh, and attorney and former president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors) Matt Gonzalez is going to challenge Gavin Newsom in this year’s mayoral race. I still remember getting off the plane at SFO in December 2003 to learn that Gonzalez had lost by a heartbreaking margin to Gavin Hair Gel. Of course, Fog City Journal didn’t list any sources, and this being the Interweb and all…
