A friend of mine told me that my next tattoo can’t be a dia de los muertos skull because my last tattoo was a loteria card and I’m not Mexican. Screw that guy. I love Mexican art, and not just the pop-culture imagery that I want to get tattooed on me. The Mexican Museum is about to bring a wide array of that art to downtown San Francisco. Currently open at its location at Fort Mason, Building D (Marina Boulevard & Buchanan) the museum features Mexican art spanning thousands of years, from the pre-conquest era to contemporary Chicano art. According to the San Francisco Business Times, as of April the museum had only raised $4.7 million of its $8 million Capital Campaign goal, which was supposed to have been raised by December, 2005. The Redevelopment Agency was set to cover the rest of the building costs to open the location at Jessie Square, across from Yerba Buena Gardens. The museum began considering arrangements to open in another building, but in May the Museum received a $2.4 million grant from The California Cultural and Historical Endowment, so things look like they are back on track.
This Thursday, the museum celebrates acquisitions from the Don Julio (yes, the tequila) Collection at The Togonon Gallery (77 Geary Street). Art from San Francisco’s own Caleb Duarte, Viva Paredes, LA-based artist Camille Rose Garcia and others will be shown. Space is limited and RSVP is required. Send an e-mail to tdj@hunterpr.com to attend.
Must be 21 years of age or older to attend. $5 minimum donation to be made at the door. All proceeds benefit The Mexican Museum.
