Balazo Gallery
2183 Mission St. @ 18th
Friday November 30 @ 6 pm

My friend Amy Woloszyn is a local bicyclist, political activist & artist who was the victim of a hit & run accident 2 months ago on Capp Street @ 23rd Street.

She suffered a fractured skull, lacerated liver, numerous cuts & bruises and almost died. Now she has to wear a neck brace for the next three months and use a cane to get around. Because she will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time, she & her friends are trying to raise money to pay her bills and rent while she heals.

This benefit will be an art & services auction— paintings, massages, bake sale, that sort of thing with music performances throughout the night. She also has some chef friends who are going to prepare delicious foods.  Come if you can!

I was introduced to Casey Jex Smith at the Marin Headlands Fall Open House in October and really liked his use of color and geometric shapes. Now he is just one of the artists featured in “The There There,” an exhibition of East Bay artists at the Esteban Sabar Gallery in Oakland. Other artists include Derek Weisberg, Josh Keyes and Crystal Morey and proceeds from the show will help pay medical bills of local writer & curator Theo Konrad Auer.

NOLA

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Tomorrow, I’m heading to New Orleans for a week and a half. These are photos I took the last time I was there, in June 2006. It looked like this for miles and miles. It’s still a mess. Meanwhile, we are spending $300 million in Iraq every day.

I saw on Fecal Face that there is an art sale being held this Saturday to benefit the residents eviction defense at 608C Haight Street. I’ve emailed a few people to find the details. Anyone know the story?

Update: So, yes, my sources are fairly vague, but here’s what I’ve received so far: I think Dwyer* is getting evicted or something and is trying to get some $$ to keep it from happening or something. should be a good show!
*That would be John Dwyer of The Ohsees and The Coachwhips fame. (This info comes from a top Fecal Face Administration official.)

Takin’ It All The Way To The Bank

SF Food Bank

I have, I promise, started Part 2 of the El Bulli post. I underestimate my superpowers though, because it took me an hour, that’s right — AN HOUR, to write about the first three dishes. And I have too many jobs. I mean, honestly, I’m not sure that *actual* whores work this hard. Because of this, and because this week involves a great deal of personal pain for me, Jon and I are getting the fuck out of here and going to Disneyland. I’ll be back at the end of the week, and hopefully the weekend will provide a new El Bulli installment.

Today, I kind of feel like I threw my back out humping your mom last night. That is because yesterday I went to get down and boogie oogie oogie with over 20 other food bloggers at the San Francisco Food Bank. I had been there before, with my students, and remembered it as a tedious and painful, if noble, job. Perhaps that is because I was surrounded by 40 7th graders shrieking like harpies whilst we packaged lima beans.

A benefit to support relief efforts in Sudan, where genocide has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Colin Powell called it “one of the worst huminatarian crises of the century.” With the United States just beginning to take steps to aid the people of Sudan, much of the aid rolling into Sudan is from nonprofits, which will receive all profits from the tour. Catch some excellent hip-hop while supporting relief in Sudan.

Menu for Hope III — Get Your Giving On

Monday, December 11th, 2006

OK, kids, here’s the deal — every year we food bloggers (and by that I mean world wide) join forces for good. The campaign is called menu for hope, and this is the first time I’ve had an actual prize to donate instead of just throwing some cash of my own at the cause.

Here’s how it works. We raise some money for the United Nations World Food Programme by having you donate to the cause. Every $10 you donate gives you a raffle ticket to win one of the fabulous prizes AND –get this — you get to choose which prizes you want most. Super fucking rad, right?
