Hightower

@ 12 Galaxies
$12
This Saturday, get ready for a night of intense, droning, sludge metal from three amazing local acts. Kicking off the night are skate-metal (please refer to photo above) masters Hightower. Next up is Night After Night, who along with the openers were kicked out of a venue in Austin, Texas as the owner yelled at the bouncer, “Don’t let anyone with a skateboard back into this bar!” Headlining is the incomparable High On Fire, one of the best metal bands ever. Yeah, I said it.

When I Was… by Calling All Monsters

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

By a mystery man from Calling All Monsters.

So I must have been like 9 or so… and I saw the video for “Stand and Deliver” by Adam and The Ants on this show called MV3…. it was a video show, that I think, originated in England (all the VJ’s were British)… somehow, this program was syndicated on a local station I got (Hey, I am a kid, I don’t know how these things worked…).

Adam and the Ants Kings of the Wild Frontier    Anyway, I went out and bought the cassette of the album, KINGS OF THE WILD FRONTIER…. the LP didn’t have “Stand and Deliver” on it, but the cassette did. I have since bought the LP and pump that record at least once a month.
Men At WorkQueenJ Geils Band
My mom and I used to buy 45’s from the Radio Shack in town. Men at Work “Who can it Be Now?”: J Geils “Centerfold” : QUeen “Another One Bites the Dust”, stuff like that.

The best thing about that MV3 show, was that they would show all types of videos, no matter what style… Like in the half hour the videos would be Billy Joel’s “Pressure”, then The Cure’s “The Walk”, then Judas Priest’s “Breaking the Law”……. which was obviously, rad.

Opening Reception: 10th Annual Post-Postcard Show @ The Lab

6:00 pmto9:00 pm

Last night I went into the neighborhood video rental store Lost Weekend Video and I noticed they had new buttons for sale illustrated by local artist Maria Forde. I missed out on her “Actors I think are Good” buttons the last time (I really wanted the Harry Dean Stanton one), but there were now 10 new awesome designs. This time the buttons were “10 Movies I think are Good” depicting famous scenes from said movies.

I was so excited because there were ones that had scenes from A Knife in the Water (one of my favorite movies EVAR):

…and Scanners!

I bought the Scanners button because it allows me to convey my Pro-Cronenberg position to strangers (It’s now attached to my purse), but when I return my video I plan to get the Knife one as well as The Jerk:

Maria will be selling sticker packets at the 10th Annual “Post-Postcard Show” tonight at The Lab from 6-9PM.

You should also poke around on her website because there is a lot of fun artwork on there. her Marlon Brando Comic is especially awesome.

CD Review: Robert Pollard Normal Happiness

Robert Pollard Normal Happiness

Robert Pollard
Normal Happiness
Merge Records

Robert Pollard’s second post-Guided By Voices effort, Normal Happiness, released this month, is another sweet dose of rockin’ pop songs from this true original. With his harder experimental and lo-fi sides now mostly being explored through side projects and collaborations, Pollard here delivers a batch of triumphantly fun and funny songs like “Get a Faceful” and “Supernatural Car Lover”, which go right to the sing-a-long in the car or shower category. Good stuff. Buying this directly from Merge and some record stores yields the nice bonus CD, Moon, a 15-song live recording of Bob and his band, The Ascended Masters, on the road last spring.

When I was… Brian Gorman of Tartufi

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

Brian Gorman from Tartufi clues us in on his record collection at age 11.

I was eleven years old in 1985, in Troy, New York; where all the kids were into Iron Maiden and Metallica. I learned about bands mostly from my older brother, Scott, but also from the constant buzz of radios and TVs on in our home. MTV was on constantly.

Van Halen 1984 Van Halen – 1984 – This album was like a sex ed class before I knew what sex was. “Why are they easing the seats back and reaching between their legs?”

Bon Jovi Bon Jovi – Bon Jovi – This was my first taste of what became sort of an embarrassing obsession. Two years later I went to the Bon Jovi / Cinderella show and screamed so loud I lost my voice. The next day in shop class I got in a fight because a kid called me a pussy for going to the show.

Quiet Riot Metal Health Quiet Riot – Metal Health – I listened to this album over and over and over while reading a book called, “The Electric Book”- a freaky story about a kid with a magic typewriter. To this day if I hear a QR song every detail of that story comes back to me.

Cat Power feat. The Memphis Rhythm Band @ the Fillmore

Cat20Power.jpgCat Power Poster
When Hubby announced that he purchased Cat Power tickets I was somewhat conflicted. On one hand her albums are pretty good, on the other hand, watching her perform live can be a very uncomfortable experience. On my third hand, her latest release The Greatest has a permanent spot in my car door, plus she was touring with a southern style rhythm back-up band, which definitely piqued my interest. Hubby convinced me that with a proper band keeping her in check, there was no way she could get away with acting like a lunatic. He was right. Despite ridiculous off-beat dancing, and some slightly awkward interactions with fans, the show was well worth the thirty-eight fifty. It was almost all about The Greatest, opening with the title track and playing the album mostly through, a couple of transitions with musicians here and there, plus a few stylized cuts from Nude as News and What Would the Community Think.

The Memphis Rhythm band is a legitimate rhythm and blues outfit, complete with jovial back-up singers, a organ/piano player acting as lead, horn section, multiple guitar players, drummer, and don’t forget about the fresh-faced seemingly timid violinist. Together, playing on stage, they gelled. There was even some intimate piano moments where Chan was able to genuinely offer the audience her brand of clever musical expression without stopping or mumbling or acting like a damn fool. Despite the fact that Chan was only partially retarded, it was a good thing that Hubby bought the tickets, Cat Power’s solid performance at the Fillmore offered some much needed professional redemption.

When I was…

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006

When I was 11, I was in 6th grade and one of my assignments was to write and illustrate my very own book. I decided to write about a spoiled affluent girl named Mary whose mom sends her to Compton to learn about the “real world” after she throws her escargot plate at the wall. During this journey of personal epiphanies, she witnesses gang violence, crack being dealt to kids her age, corrupt & lazy cops, and prostitution.

Baby Girl (Pizzeria Delfina — San Francisco, CA)

Pizzeria Delfina

I waited very patiently through the gestation period, but you bet your ass that as soon as Pizzeria Delfina (3511 - 18th Street @ Guerrero, 415.437.6800) opened her glorious doors, I was there.

Jon and I arrived to a small line (but a line nonetheless) on their first day of service. When the doors opened at noon, We rushed to seats at the counter for prime viewing pleasure, threw some flowers at Annie as a congratulations gesture (which, in retrospect, must have seemed like an assault attempt considering the ferocity with which it was done) and got to looking at our porn menus.

The server was sweet and friendly in true Delfina style, and we were totally in our element sitting at the counter. We had a great view of all the vittles coming out of the kitchen, and what’s more, we got to kick it with the funk-o-licious Melissa and Michael, who happened to be seated next to us at the bar.

B Cause & Max Kane Night of the Remix

DJs B. Cause & Max Kane
Night Of The Remix
4 One Funk

Members of the 4 One Funk Crew and the Dollar Bin Quintet, DJs B. Cause and Max Kane (a.k.a. Ayles One) recently released their Night Of The Remix CD with a poppin’ dance party at Milk Bar out on Haight. A seamless mixdown of new and classic rap tracks with new and classic funk and soul cuts, standouts include the Mac Dre / The Team mash of “Bleezies & Heem,” the Too Short / Juelz Santana “Blow The Whistle Song” over Otis Redding, and an Eddie K exclusive rap laced up with The Federation’s “18 Dummy” track. But that’s just scratching the surface of this mix. This is 31 tracks of nothin’ but ass-shakin’ joints—a dance party waiting to happen.

“This is teetering on the fine line between Emo Brat and Mopey Goth.” Entry

“Its cute you think you’re the next lester bangs” Entry

“Cry, little Lib. Cry me a river. Then bottle up your tears and send them to me, I want to drink the bitter tears of a crying, enraged, China-syndrome-meltdown Liberal. Oh, and in return, as I’m magnanimous, I’ll send you a packet of razor blades. Use them. In the meantime, if you have a girlie—and I’m just assuming, though what a woman would see in a gelding like you I have no idea—tell her to get really adept at using coathangers. Two words for ya, assbag: Supreme Court.”

Today he was referenced as “eloquent and oft-quoted” (uh-huh) by on Slate, in an article about Pitchfork Media, which references Daniel’s manifesto, “Pitchfork Media Can Suck My Cock.”

Update:
Daniel Taylor Alcee Hastings responds: “Sorry Haters, God Is Not Finished With Me Yet.”
